The Ministry of Education and Sports, UNICEF Uganda, and Airtel Uganda are working together to advance equitable access to quality digital learning opportunities through improved school connectivity in Uganda. The partnership supports efforts to bridge the digital divide by enabling schools to access digital learning resources, strengthen digital skills, and improve coordination among government, private sector, development partners, and education stakeholders.
As the initiative expands, the partners need a simple and user-friendly prototype to help visualize how a future School Connectivity Partnership Portal could support planning, monitoring, reporting, and knowledge sharing. The prototype will help stakeholders review possible portal features, including school profiles, connectivity status, basic dashboard indicators, document organization, and map-based visualization using dummy or anonymized data.
Through this assignment, the Online Volunteer will contribute to SDG 4: Quality Education by supporting the design of a digital tool concept that can strengthen evidence-based planning and coordination for school connectivity and digital learning interventions.
The Online Volunteer will have the opportunity to contribute to a digital education initiative, strengthen their portfolio in user-centred digital design, and learn how digital tools can support planning, monitoring, and coordination for school connectivity and quality education.
We are looking for one Online Volunteer with experience in web design, user interface design, or web development to support the development of a functional prototype for a School Connectivity Partnership Portal. The Online Volunteer will work remotely under the guidance of the project focal point and in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
The Online Volunteer will be asked to:
• Discuss and agree on the proposed structure, user needs, and priority features of the portal prototype.
• Prepare a sitemap and user journey illustrating how users may navigate the proposed portal.
• Design wireframes and interface layouts for key portal pages.
• Develop a functional prototype demonstrating the main portal features, including sample dashboards, school profiles, document repository functionality, and map-based visualization using dummy or anonymized data.
• Incorporate feedback received from the project team and refine the prototype accordingly.
• Prepare a short handover note describing the structure of the prototype and recommendations for future development.
Expected output
By the end of the assignment, the Online Volunteer is expected to submit one clearly defined deliverable: a prototype package for the School Connectivity Partnership Portal. The package should include a sitemap, wireframes or mock-ups of key pages, a basic clickable or functional prototype using dummy or anonymized data, and a short handover note with recommendations for next steps.
