Platform Quality Engineer (Hybrid Infrastructure)
Purpose of Job
The Quality Engineer – Platform Engineering is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and resilience of the enterprise platform stack across on‑premises infrastructure and cloud environments (Azure).
This role validates the platform across the full stack — from hardware, firmware, operating systems, and network/storage paths to cloud-native services and infrastructure-as-code (IaC).
Unlike traditional software testing roles, the focus is on platform quality, performance, resilience, and operational readiness rather than application functionality, UI testing, or business feature validation.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
1. Platform and Infrastructure Validation
- Validate infrastructure deployments defined via Terraform
- Ensure correctness of:
- Networking (routing, segmentation, ingress/egress paths)
- Identity and access (RBAC, managed identities)
- Platform services (AKS, APIM, databases, etc.)
- Ensure consistent behaviour across on‑prem and cloud environments
2. On-Prem Hardware and Firmware Validation
- Validate:
- Server hardware provisioning and configuration
- Firmware compatibility (BIOS/UEFI, NICs, storage controllers)
- OS readiness for platform workloads
- Ensure stability following firmware updates or hardware changes
- Verify hardware performance aligns with expected workloads
3. Network and Storage Path Management
- Validate network paths:
- Load balancing, routing, failover paths
- Hybrid connectivity (VPN, ExpressRoute)
- Validate storage paths:
- Multipath configurations
- Failover resilience
- Ensure no single points of failure across the infrastructure
4. Non-Functional Platform Testing (Primary Focus)
- Design and execute testing for:
- Performance (latency, throughput)
- Scalability (auto-scaling, capacity limits)
- Availability (failover, geo-replication)
- Resilience (failure scenarios across hybrid environments)
- Conduct failure simulations:
- Node failures
- Network outages
- Region failover scenarios
5. CI/CD & Infrastructure Quality Engineering
- Integrate quality checks into CI/CD pipelines:
- Terraform validation
- Deployment verification (pre/post checks)
- Define and enforce quality gates for environment promotion
- Ensure infrastructure is testable, repeatable, and compliant
6. Observability and Platform Metrics
- Define and validate platform health indicators:
- Uptime, latency, error rates
- Resource utilisation and cost efficiency
- Ensure monitoring, logging, and alerting are:
- Complete and accurate
- Aligned to SLIs/SLOs
7. Resilience, Risk and Compliance Validation
- Validate platform behaviour against:
- NIST resilience principles
- DORA operational resilience requirements
- Execute:
- Disaster recovery testing
- Data replication validation
- Critical dependency failure scenarios
8. Platform Certification & Continuous Improvement
- Define criteria for production readiness of platform components
- Contribute to:
- Platform reference architectures
- Golden paths and reusable patterns
- Support incident analysis and drive platform improvements
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
1. Platform and Infrastructure
- Strong understanding of:
- Hybrid environments (on-prem + Azure)
- Networking fundamentals (routing, load balancing, OSI layers)
- Experience validating:
- Infrastructure deployments and configurations
2. Infrastructure as Code and Automation
- Hands-on experience with:
- Terraform
- Ability to:
- Validate IaC deployments
- Identify misconfigurations and drift
3. Platform Testing (Non-Functional Focus)
- Proven experience in:
- Performance, scalability, and resilience testing
- Ability to:
- Design failure scenarios and validate recovery behaviour
4. Systems and Low-Level Understanding
- Understanding of:
- Hardware and firmware basics
- OS-level configuration and runtime environments
- Awareness of:
- Storage and network path management concepts
5. Observability & Metrics
- Knowledge of:
- Platform SLIs/SLOs
- Monitoring and alerting principles
6. Resilience & Compliance
- Awareness of:
- NIST resilience frameworks
- DORA regulatory expectations
7. Quality Engineering
- Working experience or good knowledge of at least one scripting language (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) to support test automation, reporting, and evidence collection.
- Strong understanding of QE governance, risk-based testing, quality gates, and acceptance criteria definition.
- Good understanding of non-functional testing (NFT), NFR validation, risk assessment, and operational readiness testing
- Good understanding of audit-ready documentation, evidence collection, traceability, and QA sign-off processes.
- Good understanding of defect management lifecycle, including defect logging, severity/priority classification, triage, root cause analysis, retesting, closure, and quality reporting.
- Good understanding of Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies and cross-functional team collaboration.
- Experience in designing and executing software test cases and reporting on testing progress, risks, and defect status.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
